Slick RSS – Google Chrome Extension

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

I thought I would get into introducing software I use that I think is cool, so I’ve started a “Cool Software” category. So, without further ado, I introduce Slick RSS.

Slick RSS opens in its own tab.

Slick RSS is a RSS reader directly built into Google Chrome. Having it built into the browser means that you don’t have to have extra applications open. An icon in the top-right side of the page displays how many unread posts there are on the blogs you follow, so you don’t have to keep checking either. Clicking on the button pulls up the Slick RSS tab. The tab (and the button) can be configured with a number of options.

Slick RSS helps prevent me from spending all day reading the blogs I like, while helping me see what I really would like to read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read blogs, whether occasionally or more frequently.

Are there any alternatives you use? Leave your suggestions in the comments.

Google Profiles and SEO

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Earlier today, I saw an article over at SEOmoz about Google profiles. I hadn’t heard of them, but I decided to try it out. The article said that creating your profile will give you a better chance to be on the first page for a search for you name. I thought that since I was not ranked too highly for “Robert Wenger” (around #7-8), I would give it a shot. Here are the results:

My profile is the third result in Google!

Now I’m showing up as the third result, and my result seems to be prominent! That picture of the dashing fellow really draws the eye. ;)

Let me add, after I created my account, how long did that result take to show up? It was INSTANT. I was both surprised and excited. Instant Google SERP results for my name with my two main websites. That’s a good return on my investment of time. Speaking of which, how much time does it take to create the account? About 5 minutes. All you need is a Google Account (something you should have anyways). You can add as much information as you want, but adding your basic information doesn’t take long at all.

So why don’t you create your own Google Profile? It’s simple enough, and it should provide you with some fantastic results. Take note that profiles do not display for famous people’s names.
